From the Headmaster

Dear Parents,

Last week I gathered for an evening with educators and faith leaders for an introduction to the Tony Blair Face to Faith Foundation. The aim of Face to Faith is to increase religious literacy amongst young people by providing them with the opportunity to connect with those of different faiths and cultures to discuss key global issues. The occasion was sponsored by Edmund Rice Education Australia. As globalisation pushes us ever closer, it is vital that faith should not be used as a force for conflict and division. Faith is something that offers much in a world which provides many opportunities but just as many challenges.

The Face to Faith Foundation encourages people to respect and value the beliefs of others, to understand what those beliefs really are and to let people of different faith see the values that they often share. The great religions have in common the values of respect, justice and compassion. These have never been more relevant to bringing people together to build a better world. We all know, however, that religious faith can also be used to divide. In our time, and throughout history, we have seen how it can be distorted to fan the flames of hatred and extremism.

Our religious curriculum provides a number of opportunities for the boys to improve their religious literacy, not least in a program offered in conjunction with Isik Islamic College for a number of boys in Year 10. Year 10 boys all visit a place of worship sacred to a tradition outside the Christian family. Our Year 10 retreats also touch this vital theme. It is my hope these programs will continue to grow and provide further opportunities to develop relationships and promote respect in a world desperate for peace and understanding.

One of the greatest strengths of any organisation is the quality of its community. The special character of so many aspects of school life is due in no small way to the wonderful work done by parent volunteers. We are blessed by their work and thank the Presidents of our various parent associations for their leadership throughout 2009. These sixteen support groups play a vital role in building community and in supporting the co-curricular life of the College. We are fortunate to have parents whose generosity with their time, together with their talents and resources, have provided so much in enhancing the educational experiences for the boys.

I extend my deepest gratitude for the contribution so many parents continue to make to the St Kevin's community. In 2009 they are:

Mrs Cate Noonan - Glendalough Mothers'
Mrs Cheryl Dempsey - Past Mothers'
Mrs Sandra Staffieri - Senior Mothers'
Mr Garry Dowd - Fathers'
Mr Michael Zappone - Old Collegians'
Mr Lee Iafrate - Foundation
Mr K P Liew - Aquatic
Mrs Ann Maccarrone - Basketball
Mr David Clancey - Cricket
Mr Ken Broadhurst - Football
Mrs Ann O’Donnell - Music
Mrs Judita Vaitiekunas - Rowing
Mr Paul de Guingand - Rugby
Ms Anna Hayes - Parent Enrichment Program
Mr Anthony Baldasso - Soccer
Mr Martin Nally - College Board

One of the most significant events in the College calendar is the annual Remembrance Eucharist for recently deceased Old Collegians. Families of the deceased and members from the College community celebrated Mass with Fr Lawrence Lennard SJ, as we remembered the former students who have died in the last year. Among those we honoured were dedicated Public Servants, professors of academic institutions across the world and members of our brave military services from World War II to the liberation of Timor. There were men who lived on the land and who were central figures in their rural community, as well as distinguished professionals in the field of Law, Surveying, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Pathology and Medicine. We celebrated men of the Church, community volunteers and exceptional grandfathers, fathers, potential future fathers, sons and husbands. These men will always be Kevinians and a candle was lit in the Chapel of St Kevin to honour each Old Collegian.

Ultimately the quality of a school is judged by the graduates it produces, and that judgement can only be made many years after they have left school. What sort of person did they become? Did they grow those Edmund Rice qualities planted in them at St Kevin's? Did they leave a thumbprint or a footprint on their world, making it a better place for their presence? The gentlemen we recognised and celebrated at our remembrance Eucharist certainly left their mark on society as men of compassion and conscience. They left their world a better place.

Matthew Hutchison
Acting Headmaster

St Kevin's will value diversity and friendship within the community.

Dear Parents and Students

"My prayer is that your love for each other may increase more and more and never stop improving your knowledge and deepening your perception so that you can always recognise what is best." St Paul, Ph 1:10

Thank you to our mums who welcomed and provided morning tea for our new parents at the Preparatory Orientation Morning last Friday. Our new boys had a delightful morning with Ms Walton and left with a smile on their face.

Congratulations to Aiden Didone (Year 6D) who led the Victorian boys team to victory last Thursday in the National Primary Schools Golf Championship held at Rosebud.

Last week our Year 6 students participated in the first of a number of transition sessions designed to assist the boys as they move from Glendalough to Heyington. Thank you to Ms Melissa Juzva who co-ordinated the transition.

Last Sunday seven of our St Patrick’s Cathedral choristers were confirmed by Archbishop Hart. The boys had spent the past weeks preparing for this sacrament of initiation at school and with their parents at home. Working with the boys in their preparation I was impressed at their level of understanding and personal commitment to their faith. I congratulate them on this important milestone in their faith journey.

I extend my congratulations to Mrs Walsh and our Year Six Trivia Team who won the National Trivia Championships held at Parliament House this week. Bill Foster, Cameron Howard, Joshua Willett and Damon Cai rose to the challenge and greatly impressed the judges. The boys deserve to feel very proud of their achievement.

I have been most impressed with the standard of music from our Year 3 – 6 students who have performed during their class concerts this week. The confidence, level of enjoyment and standard achieved was excellent and a credit to our boys and music staff. Thank you to the many parents who have supported their sons throughout the year. I would also encourage parents to support the Junior Ensemble Concert next Thursday 26th November, 2009 in the GP Room at 2.00 pm.

Thank you to many Glendalough mothers who enjoyed the Combined Mass and Luncheon yesterday at the Heyington Campus. It was a most appropriate way of thanking the mums and celebrating their achievements throughout the year. Congratulations to Mrs Cate Noonan and her executive who organised the day.

The final meeting for the Glendalough AGM will be held in the GP Room at 8.45 am on Monday 23rd November, 2009. A reminder to parents to make the most of the social opportunities the Class Representatives have organised for the remainder of the year.

The Boyd Egan Hall continues to rise from its foundations as work remains on schedule. From today there will be some major work done out the front of the school. We have been able to maintain access to the front door. Please take care when you access the reception area.

This week was the final week of APS sport training and competition. Congratulations to our students who have participated in the various sports offered in the APS Sport program this term; Athletics, Water Polo, Badminton, Table Tennis, Touch Rugby and Golf. This brings to a conclusion our APS Sporting commitments for 2009. Thank you to all staff members who have been involved with the coaching and training of our many teams and to Mr Roberts for his co-ordination of the program.

Wednesday 25th November, 2009 will be internal sport for our Year 5/6 students and Wednesday 2nd December, 2009 will be Tabloid Sports for all Prep to Year 6 students.

I have been surprised to see how many boys are being rescued by their parents bringing in items such as sport clothing and projects that have been left at home. Boys need to take personal responsibility for remembering to bring to school the items they need for the day. If they know that mum will always come to the rescue they will not learn to be responsible for their personal organisation. If your son leaves something at home, please don’t come to the rescue – he has to learn how to sort this out by himself.

Glendalough Carols by Candlelight is scheduled for Friday 4th December, 2009. This evening is always a highlight on the Junior School calendar and a most appropriate way to celebrate our achievements throughout the school year. The evening will be located in front of the Pavilion at the Heyington Campus and families are invited to picnic on the grass area below the Pavilion from 6.45 pm. All students are involved in a variety of music items and this is a compulsory component of the school curriculum, thus all students are expected to attend.

All Glendalough students will be told they are to be seated with their family once the Carols have commenced. I ask parents to closely supervise brothers/sisters who do not attend St Kevin’s to ensure they are not roaming around the oval in darkness. BBQ sausages and soft drinks can be purchased from the Music Association and parking will be limited at the Heyington Campus, Glendalough will remain open.

Preparations for the end of the year are well underway. Our Year 6 students will finish class on Tuesday 8th December, 2009 with their Farewell Mass to be held at St Ignatius, Richmond at 7.30 pm on the Tuesday evening. Our Prep to Year 5 students will conclude on Wednesday 9th December, 2009 at 12 noon.

Please remember Angus (Year 3) and Oliver (Year 5D) Hanrahan and their family in your prayers as their grandfather passed away this week.

Yours sincerely

Waiting

I hadn’t thought of Paul for ages. I did this week. He wasn’t always the easiest company but was still a wonderful friend.

Paul didn’t talk much about his childhood in an orphanage. In middle age, he attempted to find his family of origin and was unfortunate, when he did so, to find his birth-mother had died not long before. It meant the world to him that, as she was dying, the mother he never met was asking for him. His siblings were confused about this until Paul made contact out of the blue.

Paul shared a story with me on one occasion when I accused him of being impatient. It concerned a time when he was six years old. The brothers who ran the orphanage had arranged for every child to go to a family in the district for Christmas lunch. The children were excited for weeks beforehand. It would be a special day and, who knows, there might even have been a present just for Paul. He didn’t get presents often. At last, after many sleepless nights, the big day came around. The kids waited in their best clothes out the front of the vast stone building they called home. One by one, cars arrived and picked them up. But none came for Paul. He waited and waited. Still nobody came. A brother breezed by and told him not to get his pants dirty sitting on the stone steps. An hour later, the brother came back and told him there would always be next year. Apparently the brother didn’t have anywhere to go either.

‘I waited all day until the other kids were dropped back,’ said Paul.

You see, he was patient. Paul learned never to take a backward step in life. He didn’t give in. The beauty of him was that he threw away the script that was written for him as a child and never apologised for his existence.

In later life, he befriended a more loving God than the people looking after him were ever able to find for themselves let alone anyone else.

Paul came to my mind on Monday when both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition offered an apology to half a million people often known as ‘the forgotten Australians’. Mr Rudd spoke of ‘the cold absence of love, of tenderness, of care.’ He said: ‘we look back with shame that so many of you were left cold, hungry and alone with nowhere to hide and with nobody, absolutely nobody, to whom to turn.’

It’s not just that Paul and so many others missed out. The sadness is also that people missed out on them. Our eldest son, Benny, is the same age as Paul was in the story. Benny, aged six, is just completing his first year at big school. You’d need a dozen whiteboards to write down all the things he has learned along the way and not all those lessons have been easy for him. But as he has been learning he has also been teaching us. One night, he had something strange and wonderful to share. He couldn’t divulge the secret until bedtime, after his little brother and sister had nodded off. At last, under cover of dark, he was ready to share his secret. He had learned a prayer off by heart. It was the Our Father. He made this announcement in the sure knowledge that we would never have heard it. Indeed, as he stumbled through the lines, it was as if I had never heard those words before. He brought them back to life for me.

‘Daddy,’ he asked. ‘What does daily bread mean?’

I had to think.

It means having enough.
But not having too much.

Under the leadership of new Captains and V. Touch Rugby

Year 6A Green
SKC 6 defeated Xavier College, Kostka Hall 2
On a very warm afternoon the Year 6A Touch Rugby team played host to Xavier College, Kostka Hall. The first half was very even with both teams finding it hard to break through each others defence. M. Di Natale, J. Kean, P. Crawford and J. Langton defended brilliantly, which frustrated the opposition. As the game went on our boys starting running the ball with speed and it was T. Kerr who scored our first try – this then opened the flood gates. S. Birrell scored a sensational try then T. Kerr stepped and weaved to score the third try and all of a sudden we had a substantial lead. Kostka worked hard and scored but G. Exton gathered the ball soon after and ran the field to score our fourth try. The team continued their fantastic play in the second half and T. Kerr caused all sorts of trouble for the opposition when he scored his third try and the team’s fifth. S. Barnes, D. De Silva, J. Tovenati, L. Loschiavo, L. Gallas and L. Fitzgerald passed the ball beautifully along the line all afternoon, which totally confused the Kostka players. F. Harper took the last possible opportunity using his agility to score our sixth and final try just before the final whistle. Congratulations to all players on a very successful term of Touch Rugby. Best Players: T. Kerr, S. Birrell, M. Di Natale and G. Exton. Try Scorers: T. Kerr 3, S. Birrell 1, G. Exton 1 and F. Harper 1.
Coach: Mr M. Lake.

Year 6B Gold
SKC 10 defeated Xavier College, Kostka Hall 6
With green grass on the field and cloud cover overhead, the Heyington oval was the perfect setting for today’s fixture. Due to numbers, we fielded two sides of 6 players who shared 4 quarters between them. We started off the first half of the match slowly but after a cool drink and a break the boys turned it up a notch. We scored a succession of quick tries thanks to the speedy footwork and great sprinting by J. Quin and G. Murphy started to show some really strong passing up and down the line. A. Scarcella capitalised on some simple errors and picked up two great interception tries. Another super victory! Congratulations to all players. Best Players: J. Quin, A. Scarcella and J. Ingpen. Goal Scorers: D. Toohey 1, J. Quin 3, J. Ingpen 2 and T. Wilson 1. Coach: Mr Delafield.

Year 5A Green
SKC 4 defeated Brighton Grammar School 3
SKC 2 defeated by Xavier College, Kostka Hall 3
SKC 4 defeated SKC Gold 1
The ‘Green Machine’ battled it out against three other teams (and the flies) yesterday in Brighton. The boys took part in a round-robin competition, of 15 minute games. Each game displayed something different in reference to how much improvement the team has made over seven weeks. The first game was quite an open game against BGS, which saw one team score and the other respond very quickly. O. Hanrahan and P. Dempsey used their electrifying pace to score two wonderful tries each. I. Birch played his strongest defensive game and charged the ball up well. The second game was probably the most entertaining, on account of it being so close and coming down to the last 20 seconds before it was decided. The defence of both teams was superb, and captain, B. Palamara really led the way for SKC. H. Fitzgerald scored a runaway try after catching the Kostka team by surprise. C. Bishop’s passing game was instrumental in moving the team forward and finding holes in the opposition defence. But in the end, Kostka scored a lovely try in the dying seconds to take the honours. Built up as the ‘Battle of Glendalough’, both SKC teams used this as a chance to throw the ball around and play quite an attacking game of touch. T. Brownlee and T. Rawolle were terrific in this game. Their defensive pressure on the opposition constantly propelled the Gold team back. J. Goller again had another strong game on the wing. In the end, a couple of runaway tries just got the Green team over the line. Best Players: C. Bishop, P. Dempsey and O. Hanrahan. Try Scorers: O. Hanrahan 5, P. Dempsey 3 and H. Fitzgerald 2. Coach: Mr S Thompson.

Year 5B Gold
SKC 1 drew with Brighton Grammar 1
SKC 1 defeated by Xavier College 3
SKC 2 defeated by SKC Green 4
This week saw St Kevin’s gold team take part in a round robin competition located at Xavier College, Kostka Hall. The competition consisted of Brighton Grammar, St Kevin’s and Xavier. The first match saw St Kevin’s play Xavier. The boys started well in defence and offence completing some good passing plays. However, St Kevin’s failed to grasp the opportunities given to them and fell short of their usual enthusiastic characteristics eventually losing 3-1. The second game of the competition saw St Kevin’s play Brighton Grammar. The game was closely fought for the whole match and chances were taken by both teams, Brighton Grammar being the first to score. Eventually due to some great passing play from the St Kevin’s team a try was scored, giving a 1-1 draw. The final match saw St Kevin’s Gold play St Kevin’s Green team. Unfortunately, the Gold’s could not convert possession into points and failed to organise themselves in defence. This lack of discipline lead to the Green team scoring a barrage of tries. The gold team eventually came back and scored two tries to make the score 4-2 Best Players: A. Connell, O. Heyworth, M. McCosker and P. O’Leary. Goal Scorers: L. Seaholme, D. Kielty and L. Goller. Coach: Mr Anderson.

Badminton

Year 6
SKC 27 defeated Brighton Grammar 8
The Year 6 Badminton team finished the season with a convincing win over Brighton Grammar. The Team ventured to Sandringham where they rotated around the four courts available. Each pair played a minimum of four games. D.Mitrik and N.Kim played consistently and won all of their games. E.Knowles and C.James paired up for the last couple of games and enjoyed some good rallies. It was great to see the St Kevin’s boys shake hands after each game and play with great sportsmanship. The boys are to be congratulated on a wonderful season that was not only successful in terms of games won but in the way the boys interacted with each other. Well done to all players. Best Players: S. Hurley, S. Li, A. Wong, T. Pakis, J. Perry, O. Matterson, J. Chan and R Smart. Coach: Mr S. Davoren.

Year 5
SKC 26 defeated Brighton Grammar 22
In the last round of the APS Badminton season the Year 5 squad played host to Brighton Grammar School at the Wilding centre. The players again quickly acclimatised to the rotation system that allowed for all pairings to play the maximum amount of games on the courts available. K. Davenport and T. Battistella. provided a dominant display by winning five matches, as did P. Rao and L. Musgrave. The pairings of J. Hong and T. Arvanitis, W. Langton and L. Sfetkidis, A. Sinni and L. Seibel did very well by winning three out of five games. Again, it was most impressive to witness the pairings provide encouragement and support for their team mates. Just as impressive was the sportsmanship displayed throughout the afternoon’s competition. Over the course of the term great improvement has been displayed by all pairings as they gained more experience in match situations and at practice sessions. Thank you and well done to all players who represented the College over the course of the term. Best Pairs: P. Rao/L. Musgrave, K. Davenport/T. Battistella and K. Yeoh/ G. Athanasiadis. Coach: Mr T. Krake.

Water Polo

Year 6
The final round of water polo saw a three school round robin fixture take place. With limited game time of seven minutes the St Kevin’s team played an excellent “team style” game with all players contributing both offensively and defensively. It was pleasing to see X. Fanning and B. Friend use their long limbs to our advantage in defence. X. Morgan and M. Brownlee who used their strength and ability to score in excellent fashion. Well done to all team members who have shown tremendous perseverance for a relatively new sport over the season. Congratulations to all players on your enthusiasm and fine sportsmanship. Coach: Mr P Blanchfield.

Year 5
SKC 5 defeated Haileybury College 0
SKC 3 drew with Brighton Grammar 3
The final round of the APS water polo season saw a round robin competition with St Kevin’s playing both Haileybury and Brighton Grammar, with a shortened 7 minute match and playing 10 a side. First up for the Year 5’s were Haileybury, who were overpowered by our attacking trio of B. Wallace, B. Lohan and A. Smith, with N. Hallam and L. Ridge playing well in the centre to gain a deserved and easy 5-0 victory. This set up a match with Brighton in a winner versus winner game, as Brighton had also beaten Haileybury. A rematch of the first game of the season, where St Kevin’s won easily, saw a step up in intensity as both teams were evenly balanced. An early couple of goals from P. Kerr and D. Morgan seemed to tip the balance towards St Kevin’s, but Brighton played tough, physical water polo and equalised to make it 2-2. St Kevin’s then scored to make it 3-2, but poor defending allowed Brighton to even up the match. A winner for St Kevin’s looked certain and when P. Kerr found the back of the net it seemed the match was over. However, the goal was disallowed due to foul play, resulting in a 3-3 draw which was a deserved result. Special mention must go to D. Hartley who played superbly against a strong Brighton player. Best Players: D. Hartley and B. Wallace. Goal Scorers: B. Wallace, N. Hallam, P. Kerr and D. Morgan. Coach: Mr D Gisborn.
