AFL SportsReady Sporting Traineeships
It isn't easy in today's job climate to get a start in your preferred career.  You may not want to go to University or you may want to defer your course and try to gain some experience in the 'real world' for a year.  AFL SportsReady Traineeships may be the answer for you in order to launch your working life.  AFL SportsReady Traineeships are designed to apply to any industry - sport and non-sport.  While the sports industry shows no sign of slowing compared with other sectors in the economy, there are often not enough jobs to go around.  In addition, the sports sector does not always have access to vast amounts of money in order to fund positions.  That is why the AFL Traineeship Program (because of the additional subsidies it exclusively offers to the sports sector) is so attractive.  Other than in the Sport Industry, young people today have so many opportunities to develop careers within other disciplines such as IT, Community Recreation, Health, Hospitality, Horticulture, Finance and Community Services.  AFL SportsReady can help you realise your dream in all these areas and many more.  For more information, visit AFLSportsReady.

    The University of Melbourne

    • Studying Information Technology at The University of Melbourne - There are a variety of opportunities for students to study Information Technology at The University of Melbourne.
      • Informatics is the overall name we use for the IT study areas.  It is all about gathering, manipulating and visualising data - the tools to solve problems in a vast array of fields: Finance, Health, Journalism, Engineering, Biology.  These subjects are offered in the Bachelor of Science, the Bachelor of Engineering, and (via breadth studies) in Commerce, Arts and Environments.  Alternatively, students can choose to take a concurrent Diploma in Informatics to earn an extra industry accredited qualification.  Whether they are undertaking a major, or breadth, all IT students can take two exciting first year subjects: Informatics 1: Practical Computing and Informatics 2: People, Data, and the Web.  Alongside their Bachelor's Degree these two first year subjects provide an entry point into the following IT study areas in later years:
      • Computer Science is the study of information and its manipulation.  Students study ways of storing it and transforming it, and explore the basic limits that restrict its use.  Topics include programming languages, operating systems, theory of computation, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, and databases.  Students learn how to design, analyse and implement complex systems involving computer networks, databases and web services.
      • Software Engineering involves the creation of large software systems to be used in applications such as Banking, Public Transport, Hotel Reservations, and the Internet.  Software Engineers often work in large teams and elicit, analyse and document software requirements and then design, implement and test complex software systems.
      • Information Systems is the study of interaction between technology and people.  It uses hardware and software as tools to solve business and social problems.  Students learn how to create and deploy Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) so that value is maximised.  The focue is on technical and business skills, for example Electronic Commerce, Knowledge Management, Telecommunications, Multimedia, Databases and Organisational Processes, and Analysis and Change.
      • Science Informatics integrates knowledge from a range of disciplines including Computing, Information Modelling and Human-Computer Interaction.  Students investigate the application of IT to Science - and graduates develop skills in understanding, manipulating, visualising, integrating and exploiting scientific data.  Graduates are prepared for careers in Information and Data Management, Medical and Health Informatics and Clinical Research, Physical Informatics and Social Informatics.

For more information visit DIS, CSSE, and/or Informatics.

    • Studying Animal Sciences at The University of Melbourne - The Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Melbourne offers students a range of pathways in Animal Science.  Each major study allows students to specialise in a discipline of interest while exploring a number of breadth subjects to develop cross-disciplinary knowledge.  A Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in one of the Animal Sciences can lead to a number of graduate courses, including the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree.  Animal Science majors available are:
      • Animal Health and Disease (main pathway to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)
      • Domestic Animal Science
      • Zoology

There are a number of common first year subjects in the life sciences which interested students are advised to take.  This will
allow them to explore their options in the Animal Sciences before committing to a particular major.  For more information visit

    YEAR 12 NEWS
    COURSE PATHWAY OPTIONS
It is wise when applying for courses through VTAC to put down both University and TAFE options.  Remember that if you hope to study at University but miss out on a place, it is often possible to gain credits for University from a relevant TAFE course.  Two years at TAFE often gives one year of credit (sometimes more) at University in a related course.  Several Institutions are both a University and a TAFE (eg Swinburne, RMIT, Victoria University), while others have links with a TAFE (eg LaTrobe with NMIT) making it easier to move.  It is of interest to note that many students who complete a University degree often complete a TAFE course later on as well.

HOW WILL UNIVERSITY BE DIFFERENT FROM SCHOOL?
University publications make these points about the difference between University life and School life:

    • you will have a more independent learning experience
    • lectures with maybe hundreds of students as opposed to classes
    • tutorials with up to 30 students and workshops
    • less frequent feedback (you will need to be proactive in organising time to speak to lecturers or tutors)
    • flexible and variable programs where subjects require critical analysis
    • contact hours vary from 10 - 30 hours per week depending on course taken
    • students must self-manage time and study (expect to complete the equivalent amount of hours as self-guided study)
    • classmates will be from different demographics (cultural and socioeconomic characteristics)

EXERCISE SCIENCE AND HUMAN MOVEMENT AT VICTORIA UNIVERSITY
Victoria University has received enquiries about the three separate streams in this course (see page 564 of the VTAC Guide).  Each stream has a separate course code.  If you want more information about these streams, see the VU website or contact StudentRecruitment.

Pathways to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
Students can gain entry to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)at The University of Melbourne via the following pathways:

    1. Veterinary Bioscience Specialisation at the University of Melbourne

Students can complete a Bachelor of Science with an Animal Health and Disease major (Veterinary Bioscience specialisation).  Selection into the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation will occur at the end of second year.  Entry is quota-limited, and students will need to excel in first and second year Science subjects to be eligible for selection.  Students who are admitted to, and successfully complete, the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation are guaranteed entry to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with 100 points credit (1 year of study), leaving three years of study in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.  It will take the school leave six years to qualify as a Veterinarian via The University of Melbourne pathway - the three year Bachelor of Science (with Veterinary Bioscience specialisation), followed by the three year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.  The final year of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is largely clinically-based and lecture free.  Students who are considering this pathway are strongly advised to complete the VCE Units 3 and 4 Chemistry (or equivalent) as part of their Year 12 program.

    2.    Guaranteed Entry

Guaranteed Entry to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine via the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation will be available to a small number of school leavers.  Australian students will need to achieve and ENTER (or equivalent) of 98.5 or above, and maintain a minimum average of H2B (70%) in first and second year Science subjects.

    3.    A Biological Sciences Degree at The University of Melbourne or another Institution
Students who do not complete the Veterinary Bioscience specialisation, but instead choose one of the other animal or biological sciences majors in the Bachelor of Science, or complete a Biological Sciences Degree at another Institution, are eligible to apply for entry to the four year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine graduate degree.  Examples of suitable degrees include Bachelor's degrees with majors in Agriculture, Animal Science, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Physiology or Zoology.  The three Animal Science majors available in the Melbourne Bachelor of Science would be appropriate.  The Pre-requisite subjcets for graduate entry to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine are at least one semester of study in each of Cell Biology and Biochemistry.  Selection will be based on results in all third year and second year Science subjects, weighted 75:25 towards third year results.  Interviews may be conducted, and students may be asked to provide references or evidence to demonstrate their interest in a Veterinary career.  For more information visit VET or contact Lauren Hull on 9035 8109.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE - STUDY SCIENCE AS BREADTH
Science is around us in our everyday lives and in a rapidly changing world, the application of science and technology is crucial.  By studying the sciences as breadth, students will be empowered to apply scientific thinking and data to issues that impact on the world.  Having some science knowledge at the tertiary level can be very important as many of the big issues driving our society today have science as their foundation.  Studying science as breadth gives students the opportunity to experience hands-on activities through field-trips and laboratory work, develop communication and leadership skills through group projects, explore new areas that they haven't encountered before and keep abreast of technological and scientific innovation and discovery.  Students can explore their interest in climate change, life sciences (eg biomedical, animal and plant), mathematics, statistics and informatics.  Additionally, they can study subjects in environmental science and biotechnology which integrate several areas of study.  Regardless of the combinations that students may choose, exposure to scientific thought will broaden their horizons and opportunities.  For more detailed information, visit Breadth

PROFILE - THE MELBOURNE JD - Jacqueline Musiitwa Shares Her Career Pathway
Jacqueline "Muna" Musiitwa graduated from the Melbourne JD in 2005.  As a dual US/Zambian citizen, she chose the Melbourne JD because of the joint attraction of "the most prestigious JD Program in Australia" and the idea of moving to Australia to study.  On completion of the Melbourne JD, Muna returned to New York to begin her career.

Describe your career pathway - what is your current role?
I am currently the Principal Attorney at Hoja Law Group in New York, which represents small businesses, start ups and non profits in corporate and intellectual property matters.  I am also the Founder and Executive Director of Transitional Trade a non profit that aims to promote social trade, investment and entrepreneurship in post conflict countries and transitional communities.  Lastly, I am an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University and Central Michigan University.

After working for Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP (in New York), I decided to pursue career options that I was passionate about.  I had always wanted a career that would allow for a flexible lifestyle that would relate to development so when making my next choice I factored that in.  Most of the work I do for my clients is virtual so I don't necessarily need to be in New York.  Since a number of my clients are in Europe and Africa, my location does not matter much.

I have always been fascinated by International Law and also issues related to Africa.  During my undergrad, I was very active in the development sector as it relates to Africa so with teaching, I am able to provide very practical lessons from firsthand experience.  With that flexibility I am able to run a non profit in my spare time as well as work as an adjunct professor.  For instance, I have been able to spend part of the summer working for the United Nations Special Court for Sierra Leone as well as attend The Hague Academy of International Law.

What has been the highlight of you career to date?
The highlight of my current work is meeting lots of interesting people, including heads of state and other dignitaries on a regular basis.

Describe your experience of studying in the Melbourne JD.  What were the highlights?
The JD was challenging, but I learnt a lot.  I was happy when we got to take our LLM electives.  I enjoyed meeting people from different parts of the world.

Career-wise, where do you see yourself in five years' time?
I can't say yet.  There is so much I want to do.  Among other things, I am considering doing a PhD.

For more information about the Melbourne JD, please visit LAWJD

To obtain maximum benefit from attendance at Open Days students should consider the following:

    • Collect an Open Day timetable from Careers Room or the University/TAFE websites (eg www.monash.edu.au/openday). Melbourne University has a registration section on their website which generates a customised itinerary for your Open Day visit. See: www.openday.unimelb.edu.au.
    • Often lectures/information sessions are held on Open Days – be there at the correct time.
    • Allow sufficient time for your visit; two hours or so would be wise.
    • Speak to staff about courses that interest you. Write your questions beforehand.
    • Speak to students studying courses that interest you to get their perspective.
    • Collect information/brochures.
    • Does the course that interests you offer industry placements or work experience?
    • Are there international study opportunities with your course?
    • Consider the facilities offered for your course compared with other institutions.
    • Consider transport issues; is the campus you are considering accessible from where you live? How long will it take to travel there? Will you need accommodation?
    • Check out the environment where you will be studying; would you be happy studying there for 3 or 4 years?
    • Consider visiting a country campus on Open Day, especially if you are concerned that you might not obtain a high enough ENTER for a metropolitan campus. ENTERs for country University campuses are generally lower. They also often offer more personal assistance, accommodation on site, and a different lifestyle which will suit some students.
    • Be aware that if you plan to apply for a course involving an interview/folio presentation as part of the application process (eg. design courses) you may well be asked what you found of interest about the course at Open Day. Attendance is vital.
