FROM THE TEACHER-IN-CHARGE OF SOCCER AT SKC

June 2017

Dear Members of the SKC Soccer Community,

Exciting news for our soccer program!

The official opening of the new state-of-the-art facilities at the School’s Tooronga Fields Sports Centre (1002 Crescent Road, Glen Iris) at 09:00 on Saturday the 17th of June will include our 1st XI’s APS Round 7 game against Scotch College.

It will take place at the usual time of 10:00 a.m. on Soccer Pitch #1.

The other two soccer pitches will host the 2nd and 3rd XI who will also be playing Scotch at the same time – an historic first for SKC Soccer.

During the week prior to Round 7, these three teams will have training sessions on the new pitches and other teams will begin regular training at the new venue in the last week of Term Two.

In other news, the Year 7 teams have been re-drawn and new fixtures have been published:

  • 7As have become the 7A Blues
  • 7B Blues are now the 7A Greens
  • 7B Greens have not changed name
  • 7C Blues have become the 7B Blues
  • 7C Greens are now called the 7Cs

Lastly, bookings for the end-of-season Soccer Presentation Night on the 12th of August will be available through Trybooking by the end of Term Two.

Good luck for the rest of the season and I look forward to seeing you at Tooronga!

Welcome to the SKC Soccer Season for 2017

We welcome especially 77 Year 7 players and their families, together with a number of other new players from across all the other secondary year levels. This is a very exciting year for us as we anticipate the opening of the new sporting facilities at Tooronga where we will have three state-of-the-art soccer pitches to play on from the beginning of Term 3.

We are also very pleased to welcome our new Head Coach, former celebrated Socceroo, Mr Josh Kennedy. In addition to coaching the 1st XI with the assistance of fitness and conditioning expert, Mr Justin Blee, Josh will be working with our coaches at the other levels to develop a more comprehensive and consistent model of coaching which will provide significant enhancements to our soccer program this year.

More than 390 Kevinians have chosen to represent their College in the wonderful world game of soccer this year. We will be fielding five teams at Years 7 and 9, four teams at Year 8 and Year 10, and eight senior squads, bringing the total number of squads this year to 26.

Each team will comprise a squad of about 14, 15 or 16 players. Please be aware that NONE of these squads (including the 1st XI) will be ‘set in concrete’. Movement from one to the other will be possible at any stage throughout the season depending on factors such as individual performance, injuries and illness.

CONGRATULATIONS
to the following boys who have been successful in their bid to attain an initial placement in the 1st XI Squad this year following a set of highly competitive trials during the second half of Term One. Over forty-five boys vied for a place in the Squad which currently comprises 21 players including three goalkeepers, one of whom will soon be selected to keep for the 2nd XI:

  • ten Year 12s: this year’s Captain of Soccer, Paul Koutsakis (#9), Gilbert Battistella (GK), Ryan Hawthorne (#11), Dan Ingleton (#3), Dom Jamriska (#4), Dean Katsimardos (#7), Luka Nekic (#2), Conor Rafferty (#5), Riccardo Smaldino (#10), and Ben Toohey (#8)
  • eight Year 11s: Lucas Allori (#14), Stefan Castello (#13), David Comande (#15), Dante Conte (#12), Christian Dachs (#17), Ed Hanrahan (#6), Max Lourey (GK), and Christian Zubcic (GK)
  • one Year 10: Sebastian Davies (#16)
  • and two Year 9s: Nicholas Koutsakis (#18) and Nicholas Weller (#19)

The 1st XI have already played two ‘warm-up’ games starting with their traditional annual fixture against our brother Edmund Rice school, St Patrick’s College in Ballarat. Drawn at two goals each, we played an extra five minutes each way without scoring a goal and the match was finally decided by a penalty shoot-out with SKC losing 3 goals to 4. The second game was a ‘friendly’ against Geelong Grammar School which SKC won one goal to nil. More detailed reports on these matches can be found on the School website.

Over the first few weeks of Term Two, players at every year level will be allocated to a squad, membership of which will allow flexibility for players to move between squads, depending on a range of factors such as illness, injury, and improvement as the season progresses. Each squad will comprise fourteen, fifteen or sixteen members.

The soccer program and community at SKC is supported every year by a very keen, generous and hard working Parent Association under the leadership of the President, Eleonora Luisetto. Other executive members of this year’s Soccer Association Committee are the Secretary, Mirka Jamriska and Treasurer, Hilary Williams.

I look forward to working closely with the whole SKC Soccer community, and I wish all players, coaches and parents a very enjoyable and successful season of soccer in 2017.
