Headmaster's Weekly Address

Dear Parents,

To give thanks is good for us. Whenever we can admire people and recognise their talents and what they have done for others or you, it is a good thing, emotionally and even physically. I have much to give thanks for this week.

I celebrate all the mothers in my life. Distance may separate us; however, I draw strength from the character, purposefulness, faith and love that Marion Russell continues to exhibit day by day. My mother-in-law is intuitive, generous and faith-filled. Kate Russell mothers our children with grace, self-sacrifice and gentle strength. Our daughter-in-law joyously approaches the final weeks of her pregnancy and we pray for the safe arrival of a healthy child, who will inherit many of Jess’ wonderful talents, calmness and inclusive personality. May all mothers enjoy Sunday!

The Mothers’ Luncheon held last Friday was very well attended at the Windsor. Our thanks are due to Mrs Rachael McGarry and the Committee for all their organisation. Deputy Head, Ms Janet Canny, said Grace. I share her prayer below as part of our celebration of mothers.

Last Sunday, our school was full for Open Day. The music at Glendalough and Heyington was, in and of itself, worth a visit. Our hundreds of guides hosted families graciously and expertly. My colleagues answered questions galore. Many families coming to the College know more about our ways, and I trust we helped others discover whether we are the school for them. It is very humbling that so many wish to be part of this community. It is equally important that families know what is at our core in a religious sense, educationally, and in our approaches to behaviour, activities and involvement. While we are popular, we are not the best school for every boy and his family; and, it is important I state publically, that on occasion, if a family finds their values are not aligned with the College, then they should consider another school. One of the difficult questions I deal with on Open Day, indeed across the year, is the challenge of simply making it to the Enrolment List.

As I write, you can go online and register for Year 5, 2022 and Year 7, 2024. At the end of this week I will close off those two years. If you have friends registered for future years, please remind them to notify us of any change of address, email or phone number (via omnia@stkevins.vic.edu.au) and to be collating safely their sons’ sacramental certificates. Preparatory interviews for 2019 are currently underway and the ‘books are open’ for Prep.

Kate and I are looking forward to the Jazz Concert in Smith Hall this Friday and the Rugby President’s Luncheon immediately following the 1st XV fixture with TGS this Saturday.

Ticket sales for the Centenary Ball have been amazing! We have now secured the third ballroom space at the Sofitel and now have a separate dance floor area adjacent to all three rooms.

A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase from 7.00am Friday 11 May 2018 until sold out.

Grace for Mother’s Day Luncheon

Dear Lord,

As we gather on this special occasion to share a meal and enjoy each other’s company, we pause to thank you and pray for all mothers.

For the expectant ones, who feel the wonder of bringing forth new life

For the new ones, who endure sleepless nights with infants in their arms
For the busy ones, who juggle the pressures of home and family life
For the steadfast ones, who nurture and care for special, vulnerable children
For the patient ones, who always seek to forgive and engage with teenage children
For the persistent ones, who cleverly find new ways to connect with adult children
For the mother aunts, who step in to cradle and care for nieces and nephews
For the foster mothers who are called to gather the fragile ones
For all the grandmothers, who unconditionally love and support their precious grandchildren.

Thank you Lord for our own beautiful mothers, for those are still with us and those who rest in peace.

Thank you for our gift of motherhood.

As we journey, may we know the love and support of partners, family and friends.

Grant us the courage we need to face the uncertain future that life with children always brings,

And give us wisdom to turn to you for help when we need it.

Thank you for the good fortune that brings us here together today, for the meal we are about to enjoy, for those who prepared it and made today possible.

Kind regards,

Stephen Russell
